Deliver the engagement as it was sold

A client asks for one more workshop. The delivery lead says yes in an email, and time goes into a timesheet nobody has tied to a contract. Run the work in the engagement as it was sold, record each change as its own contract, and log time to the same record.

This pillar covers Deliver and Time and cost

  1. Prospect

    Customer, opportunity and proposed work

  2. Proposal

Scope and rates for the work proposed

  3. Deliver

Run the engagement from what was agreed

  4. Time and cost

    Capture work, review exceptions

  5. Bill

WIP and invoice lines from the records

  6. Post

Hand off to your accounting system

How much of your delivery handoff is rework?

Answer for the last engagement you ran. Each yes is a place where work is retyped, explained or chased between delivery and the teams either side.

  1. Is the project plan kept in a spreadsheet beside the system?

Dates, owners and budget are tracked twice, and the copies drift.

  2. Is a client's extra request agreed by email, away from the contract?

The work starts on a yes in an inbox, and the contract still shows the old scope.

  3. Does someone retype timesheets into the billing system?

Time is logged in one tool and keyed again for finance.

  4. Do you chase people for late time before month-end?

Finance cannot prepare WIP until the last timesheet arrives.

  5. Does finance ask delivery what is ready to bill?

The answer comes from a meeting or an email, not from the record.

  6. Do you rebuild budget against actuals by hand for each status report?

Hours and costs are pulled from one place and the budget from another.

One record from the agreed plan to what can be billed

A client change is its own contract in the engagement, beside the original. It goes to a named approver, and the decision stays in the approval history.

Seeded demo data. Change Request 1 as its own contract at Proposal stage, beside the original contracts of one engagement.
  1. Start from what was soldThe engagement already names its owner, deliverables, milestones, budget and billing terms. Place your people on it.
  2. Change it in the openThe request becomes its own contract, with its own dates and value, so time spent before the decision is not a month-end question.
  3. Hand finance the resultTime is logged to the same record, and its approval status shows before finance prepares WIP. A person approves each invoice before it goes out.

Questions delivery leaders ask

Can't see your question? Ask us directly.

What if the change is offered at no charge?

That can be a deliberate choice. The change is still its own contract and goes through contract approval to a named approver, so who decided is in the approval history.

Can we keep our delivery method?

The test is whether its work and decisions connect to the agreed commercial record. Ask us to walk through your method against the current product.

Where does time fit?

Record it against the right engagement and work item, then make approval status visible before finance prepares WIP.
